Newbury's Strongest at Newbury Tattoo Convention 2026 takes place in the grandstand of the prestigious Newbury Racecourse.

Newbury's Strongest 2026

Date: Sunday, August 2nd, 2026

Location: Newbury Racecourse

Event 1: MAX AXLE

Description: Athletes will lift a thick axle bar from the floor to their shoulders. The athlete may attempt to press the bar overhead for a placing advantage over any other athlete that only lifts the bar to the “front rack” position.

Rules: Rising bar, starting at 100kg and increasing in a “round robin” style. If the athlete can not lift the weight they will be eliminated and their score will be taken. If they clean the bar to the front rack position they will progress to the next round. If they press the bar overhead they will score higher than anyone that has only cleaned that weight.

Equipment:

  • Men: 65mm thick axle bar from a raised position. 100kg increasing by 10kg per round up until 130kg then it will be increased by 5kg per round.

  • Women: 65mm thick axle bar from a raised position. 70kg increasing by 5kg per round.

Scoring: Max weight lifted (primary) pressed overhead (secondary)

Event 2: SUPERYOKE

Description: Athletes will lift a crushingly heavy yoke and attempt to walk to the finishing line as fast as possible.

Rules: A distance of 10mtrs to be travelled, in a 30 second time limit. Athletes can only drop the yoke ONCE during the event. If it is dropped a second time before the finish line, a distance and time will be taken.

Equipment:

  • Men: 390kg Superyoke.

  • Women: 250kg Superyoke.

Scoring: Time completed (primary) distance covered (secondary)

Event 3: LOG CARRY AND PRESS

Description: Athletes must lift a log from a "start" line, and run with it to a "press" zone, before lifting it overhead.

Rules: The log must be picked up and carried into the pressing zone before attempting to lift it overhead. The referee will give a down command before the log can be dropped to pads, and then the athlete can progress to the next pressing zone. Time limit of 60 seconds.

Equipment:

  • Men: 110kg log.

  • Women: 70kg log.

Scoring: Time completed (primary) object lifted (secondary, split times)

Event 4: SACK TO SHOULDER LADDER

Description: Athletes will attempt to lift a series of sandbags to their shoulder, each implement increasing in size and weight.

Rules: A series of 4 sacks, with a total time limit of 60 seconds. The athlete must have the implement under control on the shoulder, and the other arm "off" the implement until the referee's down command.

Equipment:

  • Men: 90kg, 100kg, 130kg, 140kg sacks.

  • Women: 50kg, 70kg, 90kg, 100kg sacks.

Scoring: Time completed (primary) objects lifted (secondary, split times)

Event 5: UKRANIAN DEADLIFT

Description: Athletes will stand on a raised platform and lift an implement suspended on a chain beneath them, for as many repetitions as possible.

Rules: Athletes will be wait for a “down” command from the referee before a repetition is awarded. The handle for the implement is unlikely to be a normal 9” height.

Equipment:

  • Men: TBC, approx 240kg.

  • Women: TBC, approx 150kg.

Scoring: Number of repetitions (primary)

ALL EVENTS AND WEIGHTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE UP UNTIL AND ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT

PLEASE NOTE that Newbury Tattoo Convention 2025 is a ticketed event. Entry to the convention and parking is included in the entry fee for athletes. Spectators will need to purchase a ticket, which can be done in advance via Strength Register.

GETTING TO NEWBURY RACECOURSE

In order to get to the parking for Newbury Racecourse where the competition will be held;

Please follow directions to Stryker House on Hambridge Road, RG14 5AW and then follow signs for Newbury Tattoo Convention/Newbury Racecourse Parking.

Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 men and women.
